In the heart of the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, a remarkable story of love and resilience unfolded—one that captivated hearts around the globe. At the center of this tale is Fredrika, affectionately known as Freddy, a 50-year-old western lowland gorilla whose maternal instincts and unwavering compassion transformed the life of a vulnerable infant named Jameela. A Journey of Hope Jameela's life began under challenging circumstances. Born on January 5, 2024, at the Fort Worth Zoo via emergency cesarean section, her early days were filled with uncertainty. Despite the dedicated efforts of zookeepers, Jameela's biological mother, Sekani, and other potential surrogates did not show the necessary maternal behaviors to care for her. Recognizing the importance of being raised within a gorilla troop, the decision was made to transfer Jameela to the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo in hopes of finding a foster mother who would give her the chance to thrive. Welcome to the Troop: Real Gorilla Moments from Cleveland

Welcome to Greg’s Gorilla & Wildlife Chronicles!

If you’ve ever wondered what baby gorillas do all day, how a silverback keeps the peace, or why Jameela is always putting random stuff in her mouth—you’re in the right place.

This blog is where I share behind-the-scenes thoughts, video highlights, and deeper stories from my weekly visits to the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, home to a very special group of Western Lowland Gorillas.

The troop includes:

  • Mokolo – the 400 lb silverback and calm leader

  • Freddy – the oldest and wisest female, and the heart of the troop

  • Kebi – the climbing queen and a very hands-on mom

  • Nneka – still finding her role in the troop

  • Tusa – the independent spirit

  • Kayembe – Cleveland’s first gorilla birth, and the troop’s big brother

  • Kunda – the playful baby girl who’s just starting to explore

  • Jameela – our newest arrival and little hurricane in the making

I film these gorillas every week, watching how they interact, grow, and sometimes completely surprise us. From heartwarming care to hilarious chaos, their stories are real—and worth telling.
