Freddy’s Love: The Gorilla Matriarch Who Brought the World Together for Jameela

In the heart of the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, a remarkable story of love and resilience unfolded—one that captivated hearts around the globe. At the center of this tale is Fredrika, affectionately known as Freddy, a 50-year-old western lowland gorilla whose maternal instincts and unwavering compassion transformed the life of a vulnerable infant named Jameela. A Journey of Hope Jameela's life began under challenging circumstances. Born on January 5, 2024, at the Fort Worth Zoo via emergency cesarean section, her early days were filled with uncertainty. Despite the dedicated efforts of zookeepers, Jameela's biological mother, Sekani, and other potential surrogates did not show the necessary maternal behaviors to care for her. Quiet strength often goes unnoticed—but not here, not today. In every family or friend group, there's someone who doesn't seek the spotlight. They don't make a fuss. They don't ask for attention. Yet their presence anchors everyone else. In the gorilla troop at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, that gentle anchor is Tusa. When I shared Tusa's moments on Greg's Gorilla Chronicles, I was deeply touched by the flood of responses. Viewers saw beyond the louder antics of the troop—they recognized the silent dignity and thoughtful presence of Tusa. "Tusa❤❤❤❤❤❤❤" – @jasmijncyrine3862. A simple comment filled with love, speaking volumes about how deeply viewers connect to her. Another viewer beautifully described her: "She’s calm, graceful, and steady—a quiet philosopher." One commenter noted Tusa's unique intelligence, observing she often seems reflective, quietly watching and taking in the world around her. Indeed, she's the troop's silent obse...

This blog is where I share behind-the-scenes thoughts, video highlights, and deeper stories from my weekly visits to the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo , home to a very special group of Western Lowland Gorillas. The troop includes: Mokolo – the 400 lb silverback and calm leader Freddy – the oldest and wisest female, and the heart of the troop Kebi – the climbing queen and a very hands-on mom Nneka – still finding her role in the troop Tusa – the independent spirit Kayembe – Cleveland’s first gorilla birth, and the troop’s big brother Kunda – the playful baby girl who’s just starting to explore Jameela – our newest arrival and little hurricane in the making I film these gorillas every week, watching how they interact, grow, a...
